Some good news for our neighbourhood: the redevelopment of Waterloo’s former International Terminal has won an award at the International Architecture Awards 2026, taking the prize in the Restoration/Renovation category.
When Eurostar services moved from Waterloo to St Pancras in 2007, the old international terminal was left without a purpose. The project has brought this remarkable building back to life, with five new platforms for domestic rail services and, below them, The Sidings – a 130,000 sq ft space of bars, shops and cafes, as well as an immersive theatre experience.
The judges said the scheme demonstrates “that converted structures from the past can coexist with future innovation, keep an urban memory alive and become a catalyst for an ambitious, longer-term plan for the future development of London Waterloo and the surrounding South Bank area.”
A new structure links the former Eurostar terminal with the original station, creating a generous new concourse and much better connections for passengers. Spaces once used for waiting, security and passport control have been remodelled to serve travellers as well as local residents and workers.
It is wonderful to see the UK’s largest and busiest railway station recognised on the international stage, and to see an empty landmark once again supporting our local economy and community.
