Make earned settlement fair for everyone

Proposed changes to settlement could affect people who have built their lives in the UK, as well as their children and families.

We call on the Prime Minister and Home Secretary to make sure any changes are fair, clear and proportionate.

We ask the Government to:

  • Protect people already living in the UK and following a route to settlement. A person’s arrival date alone should not determine whether their route is changed, including for people who arrived in or after 2021.
  • Set reasonable, achievable timescales and avoid requirements that could leave people in temporary status for decades.
  • Recognise different forms of contribution, including paid work at different income levels, caring, raising a family and service to the community.
  • Make fair exceptions for people unable to meet an earnings requirement because of disability, illness, caring responsibilities or other serious circumstances, and avoid penalising people for lawful support they received before new rules take effect.
  • Protect children who grow up here from prolonged uncertainty, and ensure families and refugees have clear and realistic routes to settlement.
  • Publish assessments of the effects on equality, children, poverty, social care and local authorities, and set out clear transition arrangements before changes are introduced.

By signing, you are calling on the Prime Minister and Home Secretary to raise these concerns and to make earned settlement fair for everyone.
